All of us have a temporomandibular joint on each side of the face. These joints allow the jaw to move, so that we may speak, sing, smile, chew, and make facial expressions. For some people, those normal activities produce discomfort. Does your jaw pop or click? Do you have limited mobility, or discomfort in the face, ears, head, neck, or shoulders? Chronic headaches or migraines? You may have a TMJ disorder, or TMD. Dr. Boris Lipovetskiy performs a full assessment, to recommend therapies and lifestyle adjustments that bring TMJ
relief to patients in the Fort Lauderdale
Why TMD occurs
Any joint in the body could be affected by overuse or inflammation. Gender, genetics, age, and stress are also risk factors for TMD. In some cases, TMD indicates a broader health issue affecting muscles and connective tissues. In his evaluation of teeth, gums, and oral structures, Dr. Lipovetskiy can often identify the underlying cause,
based on wear patterns and diagnostic data.
TMD usually responds well to nonsurgical therapies.
Short-term use of cool compresses or moist heat relieves inflammation and soreness. Overstressed joints appreciate a temporary rest from excessive chewing, with softer foods. If muscles in the face and head are suffering chronic tension or spasms, stretching exercises and anti-inflammatory medications may help.
Dr. Lipovetskiy assesses the need for orthodontic care or dental correction such as a crown or bridge. CAT scan diagnostic imaging affords the most accurate view of occlusion. A TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) unit may be used to relax muscles. Seeking optimal results, the dentist addresses the unique musculature and bone structure of the patient, and plans treatment accordingly.
If you experience symptoms of TMD, we can help. Dr. Lipovetskiy has successfully treated patients from Lake Worth to Boca Raton. Schedule your TMJ
