In the past, dentists almost always used a dental amalgam for fillings; it’s a mix of liquid mercury and a powder made of silver, tin, and copper. The amalgam is 50% mercury by weight. Mercury, however, is a toxic substance; when breathed in, its vapors are harmful.

Dr. Lipovetskiy never uses dental amalgams with mercury in dental fillings; there are safe alternatives. He repairs cavities with a composite resin material made of BPA-free plastic and finely ground glass (for enamel-like radiance). These fillings are strong enough even for the bite force on back molars, and are very durable. The composite is color-matched to your smile, so no one will ever know you had a cavity.

What is the danger from mercury in fillings?

Driven by consumer interest in more organic, less toxic products from house cleaning supplies to food, it isn’t surprising that mercury contained in dental fillings has come to the public’s attention. The FDA has now updated its website to say that babies in the womb and young children under six may be especially sensitive to the “neurotoxic effects” of mercury.

Too, if you have an allergy or sensitivity to mercury or to metals in the amalgam, it might cause oral sores or other contact reactions.

The bottom line: Mercury is a toxin. Each time you bite down on an amalgam filling, mercury vapor is released, inhaled, and swallowed. There’s additional risk when an amalgam filling cracks or if a dentist removes it with traditional dentistry methods. It’s most harmful when you breathe in the vapors that are released when a container is open or a spill occurs.

Is there a safe way to have my amalgam fillings removed?

Dr. Lipovetskiy is a member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. He adheres to protocols recommended by that organization to remove mercury safely from fillings.  Specialized equipment, suctioning and filtration devices, and other precautions protect patients and dental staff, and also keep amalgam out of public wastewater.

Boris Lipovetskiy, DMD, is pleased to bring mercury-free dentistry and mercury-safe removal methods to patients in Fort Lauderdale. Call the office for a complete dental exam to ensure your total dental health.
